who knew

It’s been a while since I’ve done a cat post!

Who knew that this mangy little rascal who once scuttled away from every human or slight breeze that crossed her path would turn into such a stunning creature.

That first shot is from last year, right after we got her. This one is from just yesterday. She’s about 2 years old now.

Her dad calls her beautiful Mancoon coat her “party dress,” which is adorable and hilarious. You can’t see her whole body in this shot, but when you can, she really does look like she’s on her way to her Quinceañera.

She still scuttles away from almost anything, but she’s become a great addition to our family. She demands snuggles in the morning, likes to brush her fluffy, soft tail against you to remind you she’s underfoot, and when she sleeps (all day long) she’s the cuddliest little thing on planet Earth.

You may or may not recall that when we first saw her in her cage at the adoption place, Kevin didn’t think we should pick her. She looked…well…sickly, and she seemed terrified of everything. Plus, her fur wasn’t all grown in yet so she was a patchy mess. But I had to have her. I don’t know why. I just knew she was mine. Now, of course, we both adore her, but I’ll never let him forget that he would have left her there to die. (Melodramatically speaking.)

If you’re new around here, you might not know that we have two cats. The little girl cat is Kaia. And our older cat is the dashing, handsome, personable Chawser.

He’s a real man’s man. He’s inquisitive and social, likes to hunt and fish and chase squirrels that he will never catch because he’s not allowed outside unsupervised.

And he doesn’t want anyone to know it but he’s fiercely protective of his sister. He adores her.

Cats. I want three more, plus a dog, a horse and a baby goat.

barrio

This is the very yummy black bean soup, guacamole and Corona Light I had the other night at Barrio in Park Slope. Yelp shows mixed reviews of this place, but I really enjoyed it. First of all, there’s a huge outdoor seating section in the warm months. And I live for outdoor seating. It’s my favorite way to dine.

Plus, they have unlimited tacos and sangria on Monday nights, and I think they do unlimited quesadillas on Wednesdays. Did you hear me? UNLIMITED!

Sitting outside, eating Mexican food – that’s what I want to be doing right before I die.

brooklyn botanic garden

I love living in Brooklyn. A beautiful park is steps from our front door, a huge, iconic library is just down the street from our apartment, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, less than a ten minute walk from our house.

Admission is $8 for adults, and children under age 12 are free. AND admission is free for everyone on Saturday before 12noon and all day long on Tuesdays! Very cool.

It’s also very easy to get to from Manhattan. The Q train goes express to the Prospect Park stop, just three stops out of the city, and the Botanic Garden is literally across the street from the train station.

On Memorial Day, Kevin and I realized a friend had given us two free guest passes several weeks ago that happened to expire that very afternoon. So we dropped what we were doing, slapped on some sunblock (Okay, I did. He…I don’t know what he does…) and we headed out to explore the garden.

It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

daily dessert – sweet melissa

I had such a great weekend – I really needed it. I usually work on the weekends, but I decided to let myself off the hook so I could usher in the season properly.

On Saturday, we cleaned the hell out of the apartment, which always feels amazing. We collected five huge bags of shoes and clothes to donate and made some promises to each other about keeping up on our chores so we can maintain all our hard work.

Sunday was a day of complete leisure – a picnic in Prospect Park with my friends from The PIT, lots of drinking and eating and playing games. It was a blast. I slept hard Sunday night.

And today, Monday, I did some work in the morning, went to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in the afternoon (pictures later this week!), and met up with my friend Daniel for a stroll in Park Slope and a fantastic dinner in the early evening.

On our stroll, we walked by Sweet Melissa Patisserie – I’ve seen it a dozen times but I’ve never been inside. Today I left my real camera at home, but I snapped some shots with my phone – it’s such a cute little bakery.

We ordered two small bite-sized items: a delicious little Florentine and a thumbprint cookie. Both were excellent. I’d love to go back and sample some more of their yummy treats. Plus, they sell ice cream, coffee, have an adorable seating area AND a back garden!

(They also have a Carroll Gardens location.)

I’m ready for June to begin tomorrow! I’m looking forward to a great week.

unofficially summer

Have a great holiday weekend, everybody! We’re staying in town and I intend to clean my house, have a picnic in the park with friends, see SATC 2 (…despite the fact that my best gay bailed on me because he’s “read bad reviews” – pfffftt), and relaaaax.

I’m going to do my best to practice not worrying about what’s to come, how much money I have, how imperfect things are. I’m going to do my best to focus on enjoying how lucky I am to be a young woman living in New York City with the world’s best boyfriend, two funny cats and plenty of Criminal Minds episodes on the DVR.

Happy Memorial Day.

brooklyn margarita happy hour

I had a meeting this morning (Harvard Sailing Team met with some movers and shakers to discuss a new project) and now I’m home catching up on blah blah blah before my next meeting.

Except this next meeting isn’t quite a meeting so much as it is a HAPPY HOUR WITH TWO-FOR-ONE MARGARITAAAAAS!!!! I couldn’t be more pleased about this. My friend Michelle Ward (the delightful When I Grow Up Coach lady) and I have been wanting to get together for a while now. And today we’re making it a reality.

First we thought we might do lunch, but when we rescheduled for the late afternoon Michelle suggested Pequena in Fort Greene. She told me they have a margarita happy hour special and my head exploded. I love margaritas, okay?

I’ve actually been to Pequena for dinner once before with a friend – good food and booze, if I remember correctly. I’ll give a more official report after today’s experience.

Alright, I’m off for my happy hour margarita meeting. Tough life, right?

Update: The food was delish and inexpensive, the drinks were, indeed two-for-1, and we had a lovely time! Great place for lunch, happy hour, or dinner.

vinnie’s pizza omg

I had some of the best pizza of my life last night from Vinnie’s Pizza in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I don’t know what drew me into the little shop, but when I walked out with this slice of sun-dried tomato, bacon, beef, jalapeno, cheddar, RANCH PIZZA (!!!!) I was in heaven. It was SO. GOOD.

I ate it on the subway platform because I couldn’t stand waiting any longer.

Apparently Vinnie’s does amazing Vegan pizza too.

a favorite harvard sailing team video + swords! comedy

We had a fun Harvard Sailing Team show tonight at a pretty awesome bar/performance space in Brooklyn called Littlefield.

Swords! improv opened for us, and they were fantastic, as always.

One of their new videos was just featured on Gawker. I love this video! Lucas Kavner (who is also my Baldwins teammate!) is so uniquely funny and Bradford is brilliant too. Click here to watch their video.

While we’re on the subject of videos, here’s one of my favorites from Harvard Sailing Team. It features Adam Lustick and Sara Taylor, who are also both hilarious.
