daily dessert

Kevin took my dessert photos last night! He did a great job. Our agreement was that I would help him memorize two sizable paragraphs for an audition he has today, and in exchange, he would make me up a little dessert and take its photos. A perfect arrangement, really.

He put together the very last of our Breyer’s All Natural Vanilla, which I have enjoyed very much and will be buying again soon – nothing like all-natural vanilla ice cream to eat alongside any and all other sweet treats. And a 1/2 cup of it is only 150 calories, which is less than most ice creams. And he broke a chocolate chip cookie up over the ice cream. I’ve had this dessert before, a few weeks ago I think, and it was just as delicious as I remember. I do love ice cream and I do love cookies. And at a grand total of probably only 250 calories for the whole dish, I enjoyed it completely and without guilt.

Picture 382

Kevin successfully memorized his lines in a really short amount of time. It can be hard to memorize whole chunks of text, especially if you aren’t used to doing it, but he did a great job.

The cats stayed up late with us too. I think they were really enjoying the activity.

Trader Joe’s Souther Style Pecan Cookies. Holy cow these are delicious.

They’re just simple, crunchy cookies, a bit larger than bite sized. You get four or five for 150 calories, which is a pretty sweet deal, considering how not tiny they are. AND CONSIDERING HOW DELICIOUS THEY ARE. Can you tell I enjoyed them? They’re really flavorful – salty and sweet – they are almost rich, which is unusual for a dry cookie.

Someone at the desk job set them out for everyone to enjoy after lunch. I decided to enjoy them with an iced coffee. So I took two cookies, went back for two more, and went back for two more. They are still, this morning, sitting only feet away from my face. But I’m not going to eat them today. I mean, I’m not going to eat ALL of them today.

What a night.

First of all, I was frosting some cupcakes in the kitchen at my desk job before I left for the PIT last night and one small, odd-looking one that was too mismatched to be sold ended up in my mouth. Oops. That makes three days in a row that I’ve had some kind of cupcake-related dessert. Which is a little embarrassing when you blog about your desserts every day. Luckily, it was a tiny little guy so I probably spent less than 150 calories on it. But still. It was almost shocking, the abandon with which I inhaled it and I did not, needless to say, get a photo. What can I tell you, they’re the newest item on our menu. It’s my job to become familiar.

I was really excited to share them with the PIT crowd, since everyone  in the community has been so supportive, excited and eager to try our sweets. People love cupcakes, and we hadn’t done them at the PIT yet, so I knew this would be a welcome event. When I left work, a monsoon was attacking New York City and I couldn’t believe I found a cab, but I did. I got to the PIT relatively unscathed, set up my little booth as quickly as I could and began selling treats. I’d given Faryn the night off, so I was flying solo.

It was going well – I’d met a few new people, chatted up a few friends (Hi Paula!) and the cupcakes were selling like…hotcakes. Then, out of nowhere, the table went crashing to the ground. Just like that – no warning, no fanfare, it just fell right over of its own volition and slammed onto the floor. All my beautiful cupcakes were splattered on the ground, along with everything else (brownies and bars, but they were wrapped, so they survived), and the packed lobby which had seconds earlier been filled with a deafening din instantly fell completely silent as everyone whipped their heads around to find the source of the clatter, only to see me standing there blushing. Oof. It was pretty humiliating.

But the world is a place filled with nice and helpful people and a number of them jumped into action to help me clean up the mess. I was so grateful for the assitance. Everything was back to normal in just a few minutes, besides my feeling slightly shaken. Most of the cupcakes, however, were destroyed.

The funny thing is, that didn’t seem to deter anyone. I sold off all the ones that hadn’t fallen, and when the non-floor cupcakes were gone, people dove into the brownies and chewy chocolate graham bars. And some other people still came up to ask about the cupcakes. I said, I had a bit of an accident and a lot of them ended up on the floor, so they’re all gone. Almost every person said, “I don’t care! Where are they? I’ll eat a floor cupcake!” So I took out a tray of the few I’d salvaged from the floor and gave them away! Of the ones that had fallen, most of them had gone straight to the garbage but I saved these few that hadn’t hit face down and still looked edible. I didn’t have a plan for them, as they were too ugly to sell (and they’d been on the FLOOR!?!?!), but I couldn’t bare to toss all of them. People didn’t seem to mind the floor part – the free cupcake aspect seemed to outweigh everything.

And then, the best thing of all happened. My friend and former improv coach, Jess (Hi Jess!) came into the lobby, heard she’d missed the cupcakes, heard I’d thrown some away, and she marched right over to the trash, saw one on top that was housed in some aluminum foil, plucked it right out of the can and ate it. I was impressed to say the least. I may have done the very same thing. A cupcake is a cupcake and a FREE cupcake is still a cupcake, even if it’s spent some time near some trash. It was wrapped in aluminum foil. Perfectly edible.

Whew! It was a fun time and I had a lot of great conversations with people who were very complimentary of all the sweets and very excited about the idea that we’re opening a bakery. I could never have imagined that even people I’ve never met before would be supportive, impressed and inspired by all of this. A lot of people asked about our location and I told them all we’re still working toward a storefront. I cannot wait for the day when I can say, “We’re located on _________ right next to the flower shop.” Someday.

My improv team, The Baldwins, had a fun, silly show and it was great to play with them. (I hadn’t seen them all in a couple weeks because of some oddities on my Wednesday nights lately.) And then Kevin and I headed home to a pair of very hungry cats who were squawking their displeasure the moment we walked in the door.

Long story short: I settled onto the couch with this tiny bowl of Breyers All Natural Vanilla ice cream (about 1/4 cup), plus a couple dark chocolate covered pretzels sprinkled over top. Even though I’d already had my cupcake earlier in the evening, I needed another little something sweet to round out the interesting night. It was delicious and refreshing and tasted kinda like my favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor, Chubby Hubby. I think I’ll add a little swirl of peanut butter next time I have this combo. And then you’ll have to scrape me off the ceiling.

Not be boring, but I had another cupcake last night. Well, I actually only had half a cupcake.

One of my most relied upon tactics in maintaining my weight (after losing 115 pounds five years ago and then learning how to stay slim when the “honeymoon” of my brand new body wore off) is something that the popular “real food” blogger, Kath Younger, calls The Squiggly Line Effect. It’s not rocket science - it’s just a way of thinking about your weight and your food intake as a balancing act – you lose a little, you gain a little – and you ultimately break even. Kath says, “I believe that so long as you overeat on occasion, you have to undereat on occasion too in order to balance out…”

I live this philosophy every day. I enjoy myself at parties, on vacations, on special occasions, or even sometimes when I’m just feeling indulgent. And to counteract that, and because all good things must come in moderation, I focus on eating more nutrient rich foods and fewer calories the rest of the time.

I was pretty restrictive, calorically, yesterday. I felt completely bloated and almost exhausted-by-digestion from two consecutive weekends of spending time eating meals out and sampling new sweets or drinks, first with my parents, then with Kevin’s. I finally hit a wall yesterday and all I wanted was leafy greens, whole grains and fruit.

But I will always, unless things are really dire, have dessert.

So I had half a cupcake when I got home from rehearsal last night. There was one sample vanilla cupcake hanging around from the night before and I slathered a little buttercream frosting on it – frosting Faryn had prepared and handed over to me so that I could frost a bigger batch of cupcakes. Besides wanting a little something sweet, I really did have to (“have to”) taste the cupcake with the frosting to make sure it was the flavor we were hoping for. Good news. It was. They are SO good.

And, so! There will be fresh vanilla cupcakes for sale at the PIT tonight! I can’t wait to share them with everyone. I hope you love them. I devoured this little half cupcake, giving the other half to Kevin who made a lot of “Mmmmm” noises and a few after-the-fact “Mmph!”s for good measure.

Here are some of the naked cupcakes, fresh out of the oven. When you see them tonight, they will be wearing their frosting bonnets.

daily dessert – vacation weekend round-up

Picture 240

There are going to be a lot of sinful shots of a variety of desserts in this post and I apologize in advance for any cravings they inspire in you. I ate a lot of delicious things this weekend when Kevin and I were up in the Berkshires with his family. As I mentioned, the computer room at the resort didn’t provide me many options in terms of uploading photos, so I had to wait until now.

Without further ado, and hopefully without too many of my own words clouding up the mouth watering images, I present to you, my weekend in desserts:

Picture 239

Here is a cashew and dark chocolate turtle from the nearby general store. I had a tiny bite of this and it was salty and yummy.

Picture 238

I made a small batch of red velvet cupcakes for everyone. This photo makes it sort of look like a radioactive mistake at a nuclear plant, but they were good – rich and moist. (Pat my own back.)

Picture 191

Kevin and I also picked up a few truffles at the nearby shop. These looked good and were very pretty, but as I mentioned in a post over the weekend, I wasn’t that impressed with them. They tasted like they’d been sitting out for a while and their flavors didn’t knock me out.

I only had a small sliver of a couple of these truffles.

Next stop: PIE.

Picture 232

Picture 233

These, along with the first photo in this post, are shots of the divine cherry pie that Kevin’s parents picked up at a nearby farm, where they also got a bunch of food for a big BBQ we did on Saturday night. Apparently the fam, who had spent the week at the resort before Kevin and I arrived late Thursday night, had already enjoyed an entirely local meal from said farm earlier in the week. We were so glad they decided to do it again while we were there. We had grass fed beef burgers, corn on the cob, and lots of yummy salads. And then there was the true star of the show, this amazing pie. Because I (stupidly) indulged in light ice cream before the pie came out (what a waste!), I only had two forkfuls of the pie. It was really delicious and fresh tasting. I wish I’d had room for more, but I was stuffed and didn’t want to push it. The few minutes of yummy-ness weren’t worth feeling like a balloon all night long, so I held off.

Picture 199

Here is the light ice cream I wrote about over the weekend. It was really good. Turkey Hill brand. Again, I’m not usually a fan of light stuff, as it usually leaves the “real food” component to the wayside, but if you must have light ice cream, this is good stuff to try. I really liked it.

Picture 197

Picture 198

So that’s it – my vacation dessert parade. The only thing I probably ate a bit too much of was the light ice cream, so all in all, it was a success in terms of my waistline. And in terms of yummy desserts, even though some of what I had wasn’t to die for, a lot of it was very, very good. Another success there.

We had a very nice time on our trip. We swam, ate, walked, hiked, lazed around in the sun, read magazines and newspapers, enjoyed the company of the family and adorable three-year old Craig, Kevin’s nephew, and we crashed when we got home last night – totally exhausted from all that tiring relaxation.

A successful vacation weekend, all around. A big thank you to Kevin’s sister for letting us borrow her car! And a really, really big thank you to Kevin’s parents for generously accommodating us!

Dessert yesterday, in an attempt to “detox” from a vacation weekend filled with plenty of desserts and other big meals, was a small dish of yogurt, topped with a couple pretzels (chocolate covered and regular) and a couple yogurt covered raisins. It was extremely tasty and probably boasted a few more calories than I’d intended to consume, but que sera sera.

These pictures were taken with MY NEW CAMERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES. More on that soon…

I’m trying to reign in the calorie-spending after a fun and food-filled weekend with my mom and stepdad. Plus, my new commitment to stop beating myself up about my exercise habits requires a matching commitment to eat a bit less on the days I don’t exercise. (It’s simple math, really.)

So after a relatively light dinner last night, I had a handful of these yogurt covered raisins and a few of these dark chocolate pretzels. The pretzels are from Trader Joe’s and the raisins are from a bulk bin at the Red Hook Fairway Market. Both snacks were very good – sweet, salty, chewy, crunchy and they satisfied my need to nibble.

I snacked on these little guys during the workday yesterday. They are cinnamon cookies from Trader Joe’s and they are delightful and addictive. They have a wonderful, light cookie flavor with a nice cinnamon spice kick. And they’re also relatively low calorie. I’ve been enjoying some rich desserts lately, so I thought I might scale back with these.

After a full day of apartment organizing and then shopping, Kevin and I drove north of the city to spent a lovely evening with his family, who live in Nanuet. His sister Lisa and her husband Eric generously hosted us. They served a delicious meal (chicken parm by Chef Eric – so good!) and then the second star of the evening, this blueberry pie, which Lisa made herself. It was made with four cups of fresh blueberries and blackberries. YES. It was tart but not too tart, sweet but not too sweet, and still substantial enough to be a serious dessert – very yummy. Also, because this particular recipe calls for so much fruit and very little sugar, I assume that it’s relatively low-calorie, which means it’s the perfect summer dessert.

Lisa gave me a copy of the recipe (!) which sounds so easy, so I’ll post it later in the week (after my staycation – you understand).

Everyone loved the pie and everyone had seconds!

Thanks again, Lisa! It was nice to catch up with you…

daily dessert

In keeping with my bad camera luck of late, the old camera I’ve been using (since I drowned my nice new camera in Thai food sauce) suddenly stopped connecting itself properly to the computer this morning. So this photo is courtesy of my blackberry. I meaaaaaan…What am I supposed to do, O Camera Gods? Tell me. Because I will do it. You’re pissed about something. I get it. Can I recommend a good therapist?

I enjoyed dessert after lunch yesterday, instead of after dinner, because someone at the desk job set out these scrumptious-looking Trader Joe’s chocolate chip cookies and I couldn’t resist. I snapped this photo today and it seems only one cookie and some crumbs remain. People liked ‘em.

These cookies are salty, which I love, but a little dry and hard for my critical tastebuds.  I chose to have only one because it contained a surprising 200 calories. And these aren’t big cookies by any means so that number seemed high.

I had to abstain from dessert after dinner (besides a couple small pieces of chocolate because I’m not in prison) since I’d inadvertently had a high calorie breakfast, a high calorie lunch and a high calorie snack – all of which left me feeling like I had a brick in my stomach last night.

For the record, I don’t believe in obsessing over calories, though I’ve done so myself on occasion. I find it more valuable to pay attention to the type and the quality of the food I’m eating. But I do think that also being aware of approximately how many calories one tends to consume in an average day can be a good way to gauge weather or not one needs to have a salad for dinner instead of a fried chicken tater tot platter. Ya know?
